21 tips on where to eat and drink in Prague

Prague is my second home. I spent 4 years while doing my bachelor in this beautiful city and visit several times a year ever since.

The food scene in Prague is blooming. New restaurants, cafés, and bars are popping up all the time and my wishlist is overflowing. During the years, I’ve built a quite extensive list of places I always go back to, as well as send anyone who asks me for tips. So here is my personal list of 20 places you might want to try when visiting Prague.

Prague, Czech republic

Restaurants

Czech

You are in Prague so obviously a good place to start is to try some traditional Czech cuisine. It tends to be heavy so make sure you have enough space in your stomach! In most of these restaurants, you’ll feel like you just stepped back in time – and that’s exactly how it should be!

U Medvídků

This is one of the oldest breweries in Prague and has been serving up classic Czech dishes since the 15th century. Fun fact: they brew the strongest beer in the Czech Republic!

My personal favourites: Beef broth and duck with red cabbage and dumplings.

U Pinkasů

U Pinkasů is a historic pub right in the middle of the city centre where all the hustle and bustle is happening. They tap Pilsner Urquell, which is not my favorite, but on a hot summer day it tastes great no matter what.

My personal favorites: Their pork knuckle and/or fried cheese.

U Fleků

A trip to Prague wouldn’t be complete without a stop at U Fleků. While it might feel a bit like a tourist trap, I love the atmosphere – they have live folk music! And their beer is great as is the food.

My personal favorites: Their home-brewed Flekovský ležák 13° and the fried cheese.

Italian

Lasagneria

Lasagneria specializes in—you guessed it—lasagna. Their spin on this Italian classic using local ingredients is divine. The atmosphere is also very cozy!

My personal favorite: It’s the Amatriciana for me.

Pizza Nuova

Pizza Nuova is at a great location, right across from Palladium shopping mall. The restaurant itself is very spacious and the staff knowledgeable. Their pizza crusts are out of this world!

My personal favorite: The Margherita con prosciutto di Praga or Pappardelle al ragu napoletano.

Marina Ristorante

Floating on the Vltava river, Marina Ristorante offers stunning views of Prague Castle. You could spend hours just looking out of the window. Paired with great food and wine, this is my favorite “fancy” spot in Prague.

My personal favorite: Tagliatelle bolognese con salsiccia.

Thai

Modrý Zub

Modrý Zub has three locations in Prague, I prefer the one in Spálená street, which is big enough and a bit away from the crowds. Their food tastes the most authentic for me and I make sure to stop by almost each and every time I find myself in the city.

My personal favorite: The classic! Their Pad Thai is one of the best I have ever eaten. Also love their lemonades.

Origami

Origami is a small place close to the river and might go quite unnoticed. But that would definitely be a mistake.

My personal favorite: The green curry and their lemongrass tea.

Bakeries

Eska

Eska is a combination of modern techniques and traditional baking. I particularly love their open kitchen concept, the whole place feels so airy!

My personal favorite: Their sourdough bread.

Pekárna Praktika

Pekarna Praktika is famous for its artisanal approach to baking. Their pastries are an absolute perfection and you won’t know what to try first!

My personal favorite: Their croissants. And coffee – some of the best in Prague.

Breakfast/Café

SmetanaQ

Overlooking the river, SmetanaQ is a stylish spot for breakfast – might even feel a bit hipster-like. Their breakfasts are absolutely great and reasonable priced.

My personal favorite: Eggs Benedict.

Spojka Karlín

Spojka Karlín is a trendy eatery with a focus on healthy, sustainable food. The ambiance of the restaurant is absolutely awesome, with plants and greenery wherever you look.

My personal favorite: Shakshuka with fried egg. Or just sitting there for hours during weekend brunch and indulging in great food.

La Forme

La Forme is a hidden gem with a Parisian flair. They have great selection of patisserie, just as what you would imagine in a parisian-style café.

My personal favorite: Pistachio croissant.

Dessert

Creme de la Creme

For ice cream lovers, Creme de la Creme is the place to be. You know this place is good by the always-present queue.

My personal favorite: Their salted caramel ice-cream.

Cukrar Skála

Cukrar Skála is a place I never miss when in Prague. They offer modern twist on classic Czech patisserie and also some original sweets.

My personal favorite: Vetrnik. Most classic dessert you can get in the Czech republic.

IF café Werichova vila

Located in a stunning villa, IF cafés cakes are out of this world. Their sweet choices are pure art and it feels like it’s a sin to dig into them.

My personal favorite: XL macaroon or the Black Rose.

Beer

You have to drink beer when in Prague. There is just no way around it. Most of the places you’ll walk in will have some of the best beer you’ve ever tried.

Kozlovna

Kozlovna is a traditional Czech pub offering local beer, Kozel. Their tank beer is always fresh, and the atmosphere always lively and buzzing.

Výtopna

Výtopna offers a unique experience where model trains deliver drinks to your table. Fun for both the adults and the kids. Their beer selection is vast, and the food is not too shabby either.

Bars

Vínograf

Vínograf is a wine lover’s paradise. They have an extensive list offering both local and international selection. Their sommeliers are wizards of wine pairing, so trust their recommendations.

L’Fleur

L’Fleur is a cocktail lounge with a chic, vintage vibe. The mixologists here are true artists, and their signature cocktail, the Velvet Revolution, is a must-try.

Alchemyst bar

At the Alchemyst bar, each cocktail tells a story. Their alchemy-themed drinks are both innovative and delicious. If you like unique drinks, this is definitely a place to try.
